The children at Chestnut Nursery School Taverham have been excitedly watching as their new planting area was developed! They watched intently as the planter was built up and then filled with soil ready for their new plants. It was so exciting seeing the soil being delivered by a big lorry with a crane! Our lovely Chestnut parents kindly donated lots of plants, seeds, and decorative stones to help us develop the area.
We have planted carrots, lettuce, strawberries, rosemary, and mint as well as some pretty flowers including lavender. The children have made labels to mark out what is growing in each area and are eagerly watching for new shoots and leaves.
It is important that our children gain an understanding and appreciation for the importance of caring for our environments, and we can support their learning through gardening and growing plants and vegetables at nursery. As part of our core curriculum, our Little Explorers are encouraged to experience the natural world through outdoor, hands-on activities. Whilst caring for our plants we learn to be careful and gentle, can talk about what is needed for growth and development and learn about new textures, smells, and sights.
Our children have been enjoying feeling the soil and leaves of the mint and lavender, then talking about how it smells. We have been discussing healthy diets and how important vegetables are for keeping us healthy and strong for all our adventures at nursery and beyond!
